Welcome to the Association of Atlantic Universities Teaching Showcase 2009

What Works: Empowering Students for the 21st Century

Saturday October 24, 2009

Graduates in the 21st Century face a world of increased complexity, uncertainty, and global interdependence. This world needs independent thinkers and creative problem-solvers. Universities’ roles have changed, too. In addition to providing the content knowledge our students require to succeed, universities must empower students to take control of their own learning in order to become the century’s future leaders. Our keynote speaker is Jeanne L. Narum, an internationally recognized advocate for undergraduate education and Director of Project Kaleidoscope, an alliance responsible for shaping undergraduate learning environments in science and technology. Project Kaleidoscope embraces the ‘what works’ philosophy, arguing that there is no need to reinvent the wheel; instead we should share best practices. It is in that spirit of sharing what is already working that we invite you to participate in this year’s AAU Teaching Showcase, What Works: Empowering Students for the 21st Century.

We welcome you all to the Sheldon L. Fountain Learning Commons at Acadia University, and look forward to you joining us in the Annapolis Valley during the harvest season.

The Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU) is a collaborative association of universities in the Atlantic region. The Association works to ensure public visibility for the important role universities play in preparing future leaders of our communities, in breaking new paths in research and innovation, and in contributing to the economic prosperity of life in the region. The AAU Coordinating Committee on Faculty Development, sponsors of the Teaching Showcase, works to promote teaching enhancement at AAU member institutions. The Teaching Showcase brings together faculty members, instructors, graduate teaching assistants and others who work to ensure excellence in teaching practice. It provides a forum to reflect on teaching practice, discuss issues related to university teaching and learning, and share teaching strategies.
